  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

This article was previously published under Q222922

SYMPTOMS

If you type "0.0.0.0" as the IP address of a replication partner, the WINS Administration tool assumes that you want the WINS server to replicate with itself. It uses the local server name as the replication partner.

If you type "255.255.255.255" as the IP address of a replication partner, the WINS Administration tool assumes that you want to replicate with a WINS server named "255," and then prompts you for for the IP address of the replication partner with the computer name "255."

CAUSE

These behaviors occur because 0.0.0.0 and 255.255.255.255 are not valid IP addresses to assign to a computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
