Modem Ports Missing after Installing Windows NT Service Pack 4 (222864)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
This article was previously published under Q222864 SYMPTOMS
When you try to add modem sharing resources by using the Ports tool in Control Panel, the option to do so may be missing. Also, if you use the "netmodem view servername" command, you may see the modem sharing resources.
CAUSE
This issue can occur after you apply Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) to your Windows NT 4.0-based computer running on Small Business Server-based network. SP4 replaces the Ports.cpl file installed on your Windows NT 4.0-based computer with a newer version that is not able to understand the modem sharing components.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, replace the Ports.cpl file in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder with the Small Business Server (SBS) version of this file. The SBS version of this file is located on the SBS server in the \SmallBusiness\Clients\MS\Modemshr\Winnt\I386 folder. Note that the size of the SP4 version of the Ports.cpl file is 34.7KB (35,600 bytes), and the size of the SBS version of the Ports.cpl file is 40.2KB (41,232 bytes).
