This article describes how to install Internet Explorer 4 in "Stepping" mode (also known as a debug installation). When you use Stepping mode, Setup stops and displays a dialog box after each step. The results are written to the Active Setup Log.txt file.

To run Ie4setup.exe in Stepping mode for troubleshooting purposes, use either of the following methods:
  • Use the following command to start Setup:

    ie4setup.exe /c:"ie4wzd.exe /s:#e /g:debug"

  • Create the following String value in the registry before running Setup:

    Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup
    Value: SteppingMode
    Data value: Y
