OL2000: Shortcut Containing UNC Path May Not Work (222437)

SYMPTOMS

If you create a shortcut that includes a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path, and then add it to the Outlook Bar, the shortcut may not activate the network location or resource.

CAUSE

For shortcuts, Outlook supports only the File, File Transfer, and Hypertext Transfer protocols.

RESOLUTION

Create the shortcut using the UNC path to the network resource, and then drag the shortcut to the Outlook Bar.

To create a shortcut that will function on the Outlook Bar, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the desktop, click New, and then click Shortcut.
  2. In the Command Line box, type the UNC path preceeded by the File protocol prefix. For example, to create the path for a shortcut to a UNC path of <\\MyServer\MyShare>, type:

    File:\\MyServer\MyShare

  3. Click Next. In Select a Title for the Program, type a name for the shortcut, and then click Finish.
  4. Locate the shortcut created in the previous steps and drag the shortcut to the Outlook Bar. Release the mouse button at the location you want when the black cursor appears. If the Outlook Bar is not visible, on the View menu, click Outlook Bar.
