OL2000: Cannot Drag an Attachment from Plain Text to Word as E-mail Message (222279)

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to drag an attachment from Plain Text message to a Plain Text or Rich Text created with Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor, the attachment is not transferred to the message although the pointer does change as expected.

RESOLUTION

Using the HTML message format, drag the attachment to the Word e-mail editor envelope area in the message. Release the mouse button while the pointer hovers over the area below the Subject or Cc fields.

Save the attachment from the original message and attach it using the File command on the Outlook Insert menu.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Word e-mail envelope is the gray area of the message on the left above the message body where the To, Cc, and Subject fields appear.

To drag the attachment to the Word e-mail editor envelope:
  1. Open the Plain Text message with the attachment. Resize the window by dragging it so that the message occupies approximately half the screen. Ensure that the attachment is visible.
  2. Open a new message, resizing it as in step 1 to occupy the remaining half of the screen. The two message windows should be side-by-side.
  3. Drag the attachment to the the envelope area until the pointer changes to display a shaded box and plus sign added to the arrow. This will occur when the cursor reaches the gray area near the Subject field.
  4. Release the mouse button. An Attachment field will appear with the name of the attached file in the box.
Another method to attach the file is to save the file to disk and attach the file using the File command on the Insert menu.

NOTE: This behavior does not occur when a HTML or Rich Text message contains the attachment. Additionally, it does not occur when an attached message is moved to a Word as e-mail editor message.
