OL2000: (CW) No Error When Failing to Connect to Exchange POP3 Mailbox (222220)

NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

SYMPTOMS

If you click Send/Receive from an Outlook (CW) Internet E-mail POP3 account, using Microsoft Windows NT Password Authentication, you can send but not receive mail.

CAUSE

You will not receive a warning message regarding this problem if the following conditions are true:

You are using a POP3 Internet E-mail account on a Microsoft Exchange Server.
Your e-mail account name does not match your Windows NT log on information.
Your POP3 (incoming mail) server is set to "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

Since your network log on authentication does not match the POP3 account name, you will not receive mail, but you can still send mail.

RESOLUTION

For the POP3 account to work properly, you must log on with a valid Windows NT account that matches your POP3 account user name. The Exchange Server administrator can turn off the Windows NT Challenge and Response authentication for the POP3 protocol to resolve this problem also.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The POP3 server setting for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is independent of the SMTP (outgoing mail server) authentication settings. If the outgoing mail server is set for "My server requires authentication" and "Log on using Secure Password Authentication", you must have a valid Windows NT log on under the user name, or you will be prompted for your user name and password prior to connecting to the server. With the incoming mail server, you are not prompted, and you do not receive any mail.
