Computer Hangs Clicking Close Button in Close Program Dialog Box (222131)

When you click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the Close Program dialog box, your Windows 98-based computer may stop responding (hang).
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you are using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) mouse. The Close Program dialog box is displayed under the context of the fault thread, and the WDM driver message for button up sent by the USB mouse driver cannot be delivered to the window.
RESOLUTIONA supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. To work around this issue, press ESC to close the Close Program dialog box instead of clicking the Close button.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Windows 98 Second Edition.
