SYMPTOMS

When you click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the Close Program dialog box, your Windows 98-based computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) mouse. The Close Program dialog box is displayed under the context of the fault thread, and the WDM driver message for button up sent by the USB mouse driver cannot be delivered to the window.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name
   ---------------------------------------------------
   02/22/99 06:59p 4.10.2000 452,096 Kernel32.dll

To work around this issue, press ESC to close the Close Program dialog box instead of clicking the Close button.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Windows 98 Second Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

The fix for this problem removes the Close button from the Close Program dialog box; however, if you attempt to move the window using the title bar, the computer still hangs if you are using a USB mouse. If you are using a PS2-style mouse, the desktop is not repainted after the Close Program dialog box is moved (it is repainted after you click the Cancel button).
