The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 98
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q221867 SYMPTOMS
After you uninstall Microsoft Windows 98, double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop may not start Internet Explorer.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions exist: - You installed a Beta version of Internet Explorer 5 in Microsoft Windows 95.
- You later upgraded the computer to Windows 98.
- You later installed the final released version of Internet Explorer 5.
- You uninstalled Windows 98.
RESOLUTION
Install the final released version of Internet Explorer 5. To obtain Internet Explorer 5, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
MORE INFORMATION
This behavior occurs because the Windows 98 uninstall routine restores some of the files that Internet Explorer 5 needs to the versions that were installed before Windows 98 was installed. Because these files are Internet Explorer 5 Beta versions, some files that are the Internet Explorer 5 Beta version and some files that are the Internet Explorer 5 released version remain.
