Using FrontPage with Host Header Sites (221765)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q221765

SUMMARY

To open a site that uses host headers in FrontPage, you must use the DNS name for the site, and not the IP address (for example www.microsoft.com).

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Information Server 4.0 allows you to use host headers. Host headers let you use one IP address to host multiple Web sites with different domain names. When you use the FrontPage Server Extensions on a host header site, the only way to open the site is to use its DNS name.

Note: Attempting to list Webs using the IP address results in an error that asks the user to contact their internet service provider to make sure that the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed. The details for the error simply state the following:
Error The system cannot find the file specified.
