MORE INFORMATION

Using the Winsock Proxy with America Online 4.0

To use America Online 4.0 with the Winsock Proxy Service, the Winsock Client must be installed on your computer first. If Access Control is enabled, access to port 5190 will be required. This will give you access to America Online; however, Internet access through the integrated Web browser will not be possible. If this is a requirement, the Socks Proxy service is a better alternative.

Using America Online 4.0 with the Socks Proxy Service

To use America Online 4.0 with the Microsoft Socks Proxy service, make sure that port 5190 (at least this port) is open on the computer running Proxy Server 2.0. No ports are opened by default on the Socks Proxy service. For more information about this procedure, see the release notes on the Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 compact disc, or see the following article in the article Microsoft Knowledge Base:

When the Socks Proxy service is configured to allow port 5190, you need to configure the America Online 4.0 software to connect to the Socks Proxy server. To do this, complete the following steps:

  1. Start America Online 4.0.
  2. Click Setup (in the lower left of the sign-on screen.
  3. Click Expert Setup.
  4. Add a New Location, select a Custom Connection, and then click Next.
  5. Choose a Manual Proxy Configuration, and then click View.
  6. Select Connect Using Proxy.
  7. Under Host, type in the name of the proxy server.
  8. Select Socks 4 and Use Proxy to Resolve Host Names.
  9. Click OK, and click then OK again.
  10. Be sure to select the location that you created, and then sign on to America Online.
For the Socks Proxy to work correctly with America Online, the Winsock Proxy client should not be installed on your computer. You can disable the Winsock Proxy if you so choose. This will have the same effect.
