SYMPTOMS

This article describes how to configure Microsoft Internet Explorer to automatically connect and logon to a Microsoft Windows NT domain when you check for mail by using Outlook.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure Outlook to prompt for Windows NT logon credentials after the initial connection so that you do not need to log on twice.

This article assumes that you have configured the client computer to log on by using Dial-Up Networking. The article also assumes that you have configured Outlook to connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server. To modify the way that Internet Explorer handles Dial-Up Networking, use the steps in the following sections.

How to Configure Internet Explorer

  1. In Internet Explorer 4.0 on the View menu, click Internet Options. In versions of Internet Explorer later than Internet Explorer 5, the Internet Options command is on the Tools menu.
  2. On the Connection tab, click Connect to the Internet using a modem under the "Connection" section.
  3. On the Settings tab, type your Windows NT logon information.

NOTE: If you change the Windows NT domain password, manually update the credentials in this dialog box.

How to Configure Outlook

  1. On the Tools menu, click Services.
  2. Click Microsoft Exchange Server, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Dial-Up Networking tab, verify that Do not dial, use existing connection is selected.
  4. Click Apply, click OK, and then click OK to close the window.
For the changes to take effect, restart your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

Some configurations of Dial-Up Networking servers allow clients to connect to the remote network, but do not automatically log them onto a Windows NT domain on the remote network.
