SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft Excel worksheet as a Web page, and then view it in your Web browser, cell contents such as text, objects, and formatting may be displayed incorrectly. Column widths and row heights may also be displayed incorrectly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs in earlier versions of Web browsers, when any of the following conditions is true:
  • Your browser version has limited Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) capabilities.
  • Your browser version does not support cascading style sheets (CSS).
The following table describes the behavior of various browser versions:
  Browser Version Supported Comment
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 Yes 100 percent
                                                         supported
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x Usually Fairly consistent,
                                                         but wrapped text
                                                         and wide tables
                                                         could cause
                                                         problems
Netscape Navigator 4.x Usually Same as Internet
                                                         Explorer 4.x
  Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x Unpredictable
  Netscape Navigator 3.x Unpredictable

NOTE: Row height may also be affected, although the behavior can vary.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

MORE INFORMATION

Not all Web browsers support the "table-layout: fixed" CSS property, which Microsoft Excel uses to format tables for Web viewing. This property forces the browser to use the exact column widths and row heights that Excel assigns.

Situations That Could Cause Incorrect Rendering

  • Images (Such as Charts) That Overlay Text

These images can cause the text to wrap and the column width to adjust accordingly.

  • Data Area Is Bigger Than the Browser Window

Some browsers automatically wrap the text rather than displaying horizontal scroll bars. When the text wraps, the browser resizes the column width.

  • Browser Causes Text to Wrap When it Shouldn't

The column widths and row heights are automatically resized.
