OFF2000: Unable to Save .htm and .html File Extensions to Same Location (221084)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000
  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q221084

SYMPTOMS

If you try to save two files with the same name to the same folder, one with the .html extension and one with the .htm extension, you receive the following error message when you try to save the second file:
Alert: The folder that this Web page would use to organize supporting files is already reserved for use in the current location...

CAUSE

This error is caused by a limitation of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word. Excel, PowerPoint and Word may need to create a folder to store supporting files associated with the master HTML file. The supporting files might be graphics files or macro information for example.

The program prohibits you from using the same file name twice because both of these files would share this same folder, which could potentially cause file corruption.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, give each file a unique file name.
