Registered File Types Open in Associated Program Instead of Internet Explorer (221066)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows NT 4.0
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 98
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q221066 SYMPTOMS
Registered file types that can be opened in Internet Explorer (for example, .jpg, .gif, or .txt files) may be opened by the associated program instead of Internet Explorer.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you open the registered file type from a local or intranet location using the Run dialog box, the Address toolbar, or the Open dialog box in the browser.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, open the registered file type using an "http://" address (or URL). To open registered file types in the browser using a "file://" address, create a link to the registered file type in an HTML document. Open the HTML document in the browser, and then click the link.
STATUS
This behavior is changed in Internet Explorer 5 and is by design. Earlier versions of Internet Explorer always open registered file types in the browser if the file type can be opened by Internet Explorer.
