This article was previously published under Q221052 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to open a Microsoft Excel 4.0 workbook in Microsoft Excel 2000, Excel 2000 may stop responding (hang), and you receive the following error message:
EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when the Excel 4.0 worksheet contains a defined name that refers to itself.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, avoid using recursive names when you define cells and cell ranges.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
You may experience this behavior if your worksheet contains a recursively defined name. For example, if you create the name "TestName" on Sheet1 and define it as =Sheet1!TestName, your worksheet contains a name that refers to itself.
REFERENCESFor more information about naming cells and cell ranges, click Microsoft Excel Help on the
