The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q220759 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Word, when you open a document on a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server and then try to open the same document with Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
The Page cannot be displayed.
If you quit and then restart Word, you may not be able to reopen the document.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because of the way that the user name and password are handled in a situation where Word opens a file from an FTP server and then another Office program such as Internet Explorer attempts to open the same file.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- In Internet Explorer, navigate away from the page that you are unable to open.
- Start Word, click File, and then click Open.
- In the File name box, type the name and location of the document on the FTP server.
The document should now open properly.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
