WD2000: Table Causes Document File Size to Increase (220564)

SYMPTOMS

When you save a document containing a table, the file size of the document may be much larger than in earlier versions of Word.

CAUSE

In Word 2000, more information about tables is stored with the document, resulting in a larger file size than in earlier versions of Word. The new information that Word 2000 saves as part of the table in a document includes 24-bit color, Text AutoFit, cell spacing, and cell padding information.

The following is a description of the information that Word 2000 stores as part of the document, which results in an increased file size.
Table PropertyDescription
24-bit color Word 2000 supports 24-bit color. This means that there are more ready-to-use colors available (as well as custom colors) to color your text, table shading, and table borders than in earlier versions of Word.
AutoFit AutoFit automatically resizes columns in the table to accommodate text or graphics. If you type a word that is longer than the width of the column, the column adjusts to accommodate the text. If you don't want the columns to resize as you type, clear this check box.

To turn off this option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Table menu, click Table Properties.
  2. On the Table tab, click Options.
  3. Under Options, click to clear the Automatically resize to fit contents check box, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK to close Table Properties.
Cell spacing Cell spacing is the spacing between the boundary of one cell and the boundary of another cell. By default, there is no spacing between table cells, and this option is not selected.

To select this option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Table menu, click Table Properties.
  2. On the Table tab, click Options.
  3. Click to select the Allow spacing between cells check box. Be sure to specify how much space you want between the cells in the Default cell spacing section, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK to close Table Properties.
Cell padding Cell padding is the spacing between the boundary of the cell and the text inside the cell. By default, the top and bottom are set to 0-inches, and the left and right are set to 0.08-inches.

To set this option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Table menu, click Table Properties.
  2. On the Table tab, click Options.
  3. Under Default cell margins, change the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right boxes for the amount of space you want between the cell boundary and the text, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK to close Table Properties.
