OFF2000: Underline Appears as Strikethrough in Pasted Word Object (220384)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Word document object created from file into another Word document or a Microsoft Excel 2000 workbook, any underline formatting appears raised above the baseline, giving the text the appearance of having strikethrough formatting.

This behavior also occurs if you click Paste Special on the Edit menu and select Microsoft Word Document Object.

This behavior is noticeable on screen and in print preview, but it does not affect how the document is printed.

CAUSE

This is a display problem only. When Word creates the metafile image of the document object, it displays the object by using a screen font rather than a printer font. Because the screen font does not match the printer font, the baseline of the character falls below the position for the underline. As a result, the underline formatting runs through the bottom of the characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, increase your zoom settings. To do this in Microsoft Word, follow these steps:
  1. On the View menu, click Zoom.
  2. In the Zoom dialog box, click to select a different setting under Zoom to.
  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
