SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a file from an HTTP server while running the Web Page Wizard, the following error message appears:
The Wizard cannot add this type of file to your Web site.
When you click OK, the wizard continues to run.

CAUSE

The Web Page Wizard does not allow you to insert existing files from an HTTP server.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:

Method 1: If the File Is Available via a UNC Path

Open the file by connecting to the server using a UNC path. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New and then click the Web Pages tab.
  2. Click to select the Web Page Wizard and click OK.
  3. Click Next three times.
  4. Click Add Existing File.
  5. In the File name box, type the UNC path to the file you want to include.
  6. Select the file and click Open. Or, right-click the file and then click Open in Microsoft Word on the menu that appears.
  7. Click Finish.

Method 2: If the File Is Not Available via a UNC Path

Click OK when you receive the message in the "Symptoms" section of this article and finish running the Web Page Wizard. In the new page, create a hyperlink to the file.

For more information about creating a hyperlink, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type How to create a hyperlink in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
