SYMPTOMS

When you create a Web page in Word that contains a table, the table is wider when viewed in Internet Explorer 5.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design of Internet Explorer 5 and later. Internet Explorer 5 adds table padding to a table cell's width setting.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can use the following method.
  1. Open your Web page in Word.
  2. Click in the table whose width you want to modify.
  3. On the Table menu, click Select Table.
  4. On the Table menu, click Table Properties.
  5. On the Table tab, click to select the Preferred width check box.
  6. Enter the width you want in the Preferred width text box.
  7. From the Measure in list box, select Inches.
  8. Click OK.
  9. On the File menu, click Save as Web Page to save the changes.
  10. On the File menu, click Web Page Preview.
The table should be the exact width you specified in Word.
