SYMPTOMS

When you try to check the spelling and grammar of a Word document that contains text in a language other than English, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Word cannot find the spelling file Mssp3<language>.dll or Mssp32.dll for <language>.
For example, the following error message may be displayed when you attempt to check the spelling and grammar of a Word document that contains text in German:
Word cannot find the spelling file mssp3GE.dll or mssp32.dll for German (Germany).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when all of the following are true:
  • The default keyboard language installed on your computer is English (United States).

    -and-
  • Your Word document contains text in another language (for example, German).

    -and-
  • Language AutoDetect is turned on in Microsoft Word.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu in Word, point to Language, and then click Set Language.
  2. In the Language dialog box, click to clear the Detect language automatically check box, and then click OK.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Spelling and Grammar.
