You receive a "Word cannot find the spelling file" error message when you check the spelling and the grammar of non-English text in Word 2000 (220186)

This article was previously published under Q220186 SYMPTOMS When you try to check the spelling and grammar of a
Word document that contains text in a language other than English, you may
receive an error message similar to the following: Word
cannot find the spelling file Mssp3<language>.dll or Mssp32.dll for
<language>. For example, the following error message may be
displayed when you attempt to check the spelling and grammar of a Word document
that contains text in German: Word cannot find the
spelling file mssp3GE.dll or mssp32.dll for German (Germany).
CAUSE This behavior can occur when all of the following are true:
- The default keyboard language installed on your computer is
English (United States).
-and- - Your Word document contains text in another language (for
example, German).
-and- - Language AutoDetect is turned on in Microsoft
Word.
WORKAROUND To work around this problem, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu in Word, point to Language, and then click Set Language.
- In the Language dialog box, click to clear the Detect language
automatically check box, and then click OK.
- On the Tools menu, click Spelling and Grammar.
