This article was previously published under Q220068

SYMPTOMS

In Navigation view, you cannot add a top-level external hyperlink.

CAUSE

You can only add external hyperlinks as child nodes in Navigation view.

RESOLUTION

To add a top-level external hyperlink, you must create the external hyperlink as a child node and then drag the node to the top level. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open or create a new Web. (If you create a Web, create a one-page Web.)
  2. In the Views pane, click Navigation.
  3. In Navigation view, right-click the top-level page, and then click External Link.
  4. In the URL box, type www.microsoft.com.

NOTE: You now have a child node.
  5. Use the drag-and-drop operation to move the child node that you just created to the top level.
