Monitor Detected as Generic Plug and Play (219404)

SYMPTOMS

When your monitor is enumerated, it may be detected and installed as a Generic Plug and Play monitor. When the resolution is set to 800 X 600 or above, refresh rates unsupported by the monitor may be permitted, causing a black screen to be displayed.

CAUSE

Some monitors respond to hardware detection with an inaccurate Plug and Play ID of SNY0000. When this occurs, Windows 2000 installs the generic Plug and Play monitor, which may not support the same display modes as actual monitor.

Monitors known to exhibit this behavior include:

Sony 17Se, 17Se II, Multiscan 100sx, and Trinitron 15sf

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 to start Safe mode.
  2. Right-click any blank area of the screen, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
  4. On the Monitor tab, click Properties.
  5. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Display a list of known drivers for this device, and then click Next.
  8. Click the correct monitor, or click Have Disk to install a driver supplied by the manufacturer.
  9. Click Next.
