DHCP Disabled when Connected to Internet Service Provider (219364)

SYMPTOMS

After you establish a connection to your Internet service provider (ISP) using your computer that has BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) installed, the Microsoft Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) service may stop.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Small Business Server DHCP service is designed to be the only DHCP server on a network. Because of this, the DHCP service may shut down if another DHCP server is detected on the network.

RESOLUTION

You can disable bindings to the DHCP service in SBS 4.5 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 and later. To prevent the DHCP service from becoming inactive because of another DHCP server at the ISP, disable the DHCP service bindings for the interface connected to the ISP:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  2. On the Bindings tab, click all services in the Show Bindings box.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) to expand Microsoft DHCP Server.
  4. Click the plus sign (+) to expand TCP/IP Protocol.
  5. Click the adapter or interface you want to use for the ISP connection, and then click Disable.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Small Business Serverversions 4.0 and 4.0a. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 5.
