FP2000: Prompted to Save Embedded Image Each Time You Save Page (219253)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

This article was previously published under Q219253

SYMPTOMS

When you save a page containing an embedded image to your hard disk, you are prompted each time you save the file to choose whether to save the embedded image.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the link to the embedded image is an absolute Uniform Resource Locator (URL), meaning that FrontPage is using the full path to the image file. FrontPage automatically creates an absolute URL when you insert the image file if you have not imported the file into the current web. For example, if you insert an image using a universal naming convention (UNC) path in the Select File dialog box, FrontPage automatically formats the link as an absolute URL.

In contrast, when you use a relative URL, you are not prompted to save the embedded image files when you save the file. In a relative URL, some of the path information (like the protocol service and the name of the server or folder containing the file) is missing. FrontPage creates this type of path automatically if the file you are embedding is stored in the active web.

RESOLUTION

Method 1

To work around this behavior so that you are not prompted to save the image each time you save your file, import the image file into the web before you embed it in your file. When you insert the image, FrontPage automatically creates a relative URL to the file.

Method 2

When prompted to save the image the first time the page is saved, choose the default action of Save, which automatically imports the image into the web.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
