FP2000: Password Prompt is Displayed More than Once When a Read-Only File is Opened (219146)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

This article was previously published under Q219146

SYMPTOMS

When you use FrontPage to open a read-only file from a web server, you receive more than one password prompt. Password prompts may continue even after you have chosen to open the file as read-only.

CAUSE

Each time FrontPage makes a separate request to the server for a file that FrontPage can edit, you will be prompted for a user name and password, unless you have already connected to the server with a valid user name and password.

Examples

  • If you open a frame set (as read-only) that contains three individual frames, you will receive three additional user name and password prompts.
  • If a single file is formatted with an external Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) file, there will be a password prompt for the single file and a separate password prompt for the CSS formatting file.
NOTE: Images in the requested file do not increase the number of password prompts.

In Active Server Pages, virtual includes (<!--#include...) will increase the number prompts if the file that is included is linked to files which FrontPage can edit.

FrontPage include components will increase the number of password prompts once for the page you have included and once for each file that is linked to from the include file which FrontPage can edit.

RESOLUTION

After you are prompted to open the page as read-only, click Cancel to each user name and password prompt.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
