DRAW98: Server Application Error Editing Existing Draw 98 Objects (218726)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Draw 98 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q218726 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to edit a Microsoft Draw 98 object, you may receive the following error message:
The server application, source file, or item can't be found. You should reinstall the server application.
CAUSE
If the Microsoft Draw 98 drawing was created or edited in a more recent version of Microsoft Draw 98 and you attempt to edit it in a previous version of Microsoft Draw 98, the error message listed in the SYMPTOMS section of this article will appear.
For Example, Microsoft Draw 98 version 8.1 cannot edit objects created in Microsoft Draw 98 version 8.2.
You can check to verify the version of Microsoft Draw 98 that is installed by viewing the properties of the executable. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Windows Start menu, point to Find, and click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type msdraw*.exe.
- In the Look In box, make sure that the C:\ drive is selected.
- Click Find Now.
The version of Microsoft Draw installed on your system will depend on the name of the file found: |
| msdraw8a.exe | 8.1 | | msdraw82.exe | 8.2 |
WORKAROUND
You must open the Microsoft Draw 98 object on the machine that has Microsoft Draw 98 version 8.2 installed. Once the Draw 98 8.2 object is opened, you can drag each drawing object outside the Draw 98 OLE container, which will convert them into normal drawing objects.
You can then reinsert these objects into a Microsoft Draw 98 8.1 container. To do this, open your file on a machine that has Draw 98 version 8.1 installed. Create a new Draw 98 drawing, and paste each drawing object into the new container.
NOTE: If your drawing is in a Microsoft Publisher 98 publication, you will not be able to use the previous workaround.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
