This article was previously published under Q218422

SYMPTOMS

After updating from an earlier version of Outlook to Outlook 2000, if you open and save a contact record it may no longer be displayed in the expected order.

RESOLUTION

Open the contact record and reset the File As field to the desired display order.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can specify the default order in which your contacts will be listed. You can override this default for a specific contact record by specifying a different display order for it.

If you had chosen to list your contacts in a particular order while using an earlier version of Outlook, and after upgrading to Outlook 2000 you open and save a contact record, that record may revert to being listed in the current default order.

To correct this, open the problem record, reset the File As option to the desired order, and then save the contact.

To Set the Default File As Option

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Preferences tab, click Contact Options.
  3. In the "Default 'Full Name' order" list, click to select the way you would like your new contact names to be displayed in the Full Name field. In the "Default 'File As' order" list, click to select the way you would like your new contact names to be displayed in the File As field, and then click OK and OK.
New contacts will now have these display attributes.

NOTE: Existing contacts will not be affected by these attributes.

To Override the Default File As Option for a Specific Contact

  1. Open the contact record.
  2. Click to select the option you want in the File As list.
  3. On the File menu, click Save and then Close.
That specific contact will now be listed in the new order.
