Unable to Move Server Program Locations When Upgrading from SBS 4.0 to SBS 4.5 (217985)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade your computer from BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.0 to SBS 4.5, you are unable to move most of the installed server programs to other locations. Programs that are affected may include:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Microsoft Windows NT Option Pack
  • Microsoft Fax Server
  • SBS Modem Sharing Service
  • SBS Administrator

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you are performing an upgrade installation. The upgrade programs for each product do not have the ability to move the installation files, including the user-created data for those programs (for example, Exchange Server databases and Web sites hosted by Microsoft Internet Information Server).

RESOLUTION

If you need to move the server programs to another drive or partition, you must remove and reinstall the programs.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Only Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, and the client programs can be moved from the default installation location.
