XADM: Error Message "The Operation Failed" When Sending Mail (217980)

When you attempt to send mail from Microsoft Outlook 2000, you may receive the following warning message:
The operation failed.
Alternatively, if you send messages to the mailbox, you may receive a non-delivery report (NDR) with the following text:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: Subject
Sent: Date
The following recipient(s) could not be reached: Display Name
Unable to deliver the message due to a recipient problem
MSEXCH:MSExchangeIS:Exchange Site Name:Exchange Server Name CAUSE
This issue can occur if the mailbox display name of the account is greater than 244 characters.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, start the Exchange Administrator program, open the mailbox's properties, and then edit the display name so that it is less than 244 characters.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5.
