CPU

Office requires a Pentium processor with a clock speed of at least 75 MHz.

A Pentium processor with a clock speed of at least 166 MHz is required to use Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000, included in both Microsoft Office 2000 Premium and Microsoft Office 2000 Developer.

Operating System

Office runs on the following operating systems:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
  • Microsoft Windows XP
NOTE: Some functionality, including Microsoft Office Server Extensions, Microsoft Data Engine, and Microsoft NetMeeting, requires Service Pack 4 or later when running on Windows NT 4.0.

Memory

Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me

Sixteen (16) MB of RAM is required for the operating system, plus an additional 4 MB of RAM for each program running simultaneously, except the following as noted:

8 MB Microsoft Access
8 MB Microsoft FrontPage
8 MB Microsoft Outlook
16 MB PhotoDraw

Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XP

Thirty-two (32) MB of RAM is required for the operating system, plus an additional 4 MB of RAM for each program running simultaneously, except the following as noted:

8 MB Microsoft Access
8 MB Microsoft FrontPage
8 MB Microsoft Outlook
16 MB PhotoDraw

Available Hard Disk Space

The amount of disk space required to install Office depends on several factors, including the edition of Office you are installing and what components you install. The following table shows the default amount of space required for each edition of Office.

Disk Drives

A CD-ROM drive (or compatible DVD-ROM drive) is required to install Office.

Monitor

A VGA or higher-resolution monitor is required. A Super VGA monitor with at least 800x600 resolution and 256 colors is recommended.

Pointing Device

A Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing device is required.

Other Requirements

Some Office features have additional requirements.

Modem

A 9600 baud or higher modem is required. A 14,400 baud or higher modem is recommended.

Multimedia

A multimedia computer is required for sound and other multimedia effects.

E-mail

Supported e-mail systems are Microsoft Mail, Microsoft Exchange client, Outlook, Internet SMTP/POP3, IMAP4, or other MAPI-compliant messaging software.

Collaboration and Help

Microsoft Exchange Server is required for some advanced collaboration functionality in Outlook.

Microsoft Internet Information Server for Windows NT 4.0, Peer Web Services version 4.0 for Windows NT Workstation, or Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95 is required to publish to the Web.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, (included in Office) or Windows 98 is required for Web collaboration and viewing Help files.

Internet

Some Internet functionality may require Internet access and payment of a fee to an Internet service provider, and local telephone charges may apply.

Office Web Components

Office Web Components require Internet Explorer 4.01 or later running on any version of Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT. You must also have Office (Small Business Edition, Premium, or Developer) or the stand-alone version of Access 2000 installed, to browse a Web page interactively by using the Office Web Components.
