OSE: IIS Services Stopped by Installation of Office Server Extensions Are Not Restarted by Default (217633)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Office 2000 Server Extensions (OSE), some of the Internet Information Service (IIS) services are stopped. These services are:
  • FTP Publishing Service
  • Microsoft NNTP Service
  • Microsoft SMTP Service

CAUSE

All IIS services are stopped for the installation of OSE. If you are not prompted to restart the computer after the installation has completed, or you choose not to restart the computer, these services are not restarted.

NOTE: World Wide Web Publishing and IIS Admin Services are not affected. They are automatically restarted after the OSE installation has completed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Manually Restart the Services

To manually restart these services, use the following steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Services icon.
  3. In the list box, click FTP Publishing Service.
  4. Click Start.
  5. In the list box, click Microsoft NNTP Service.
  6. Click Start.
  7. In the list box, click Microsoft SMTP Service.
  8. Click Start.
  9. Click Close.

Restart the Computer

To restart the computer, use the following steps:
  1. On the Start menu, click Shut Down.
  2. Click Restart.
  3. Click OK.
NOTE: Using Log Off <UserName> on the Start menu will not restart the services. The computer must be restarted in order to restart the stopped services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Office 2000 Server Extensions.
