OFF2000: Not Enough Disk Space Message When You Install Office (217585)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Office, the following error message appears:
The highlighted volumes do not have enough disk space available for the currently selected features.
The dialog box displays hard disk space information, and your only option is to click OK.

CAUSE

You receive this message when any of the following conditions is true:
  • You try to install Office on a computer that does not have enough hard disk space to accommodate the installation.

    -or-

  • You installed Office to another hard disk or partition with enough hard disk space, but the hard disk or partition where you have Microsoft Windows installed does not contain enough free space for the installation.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use any of the following methods, as appropriate.

Method 1: Install Microsoft Office to Another Drive

By default, the installation location for Office is the drive where your operating system is installed; however, you may be able to install Office to a location on another drive. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Office 2000 Setup.
  2. Click Customize in the Microsoft Office 2000: Ready to Install dialog box.
  3. In the Installation Location dialog box, type the new drive letter and path, or click Browse to browse to the path on a new drive. Then, click Next.

    NOTE: The Available space on local hard disks table is only a static list of drive volumes. Clicking one of the volumes in this list does not change your installation location. Click Browse or type the path in the Install Office 2000 at box above to change your installation location.
  4. Continue with setup, selecting the options that you want.

Method 2: Free More Hard Disk Space on the Installation Location and Windows Drive

Before continuing with the installation of Office, you must free more hard disk space on the computer, either on the drive you specified to install Office, or on the drive where the operating system is installed. For example, an installation of Microsoft Office 2000 Premium with the typical components needs approximately 270 MB of free disk space. This is approximately 138 MB of disk space required on the drive where Windows is installed, and 132 MB of disk space on the drive where Office is installed.

Method 3: Customize Your Microsoft Internet Explorer Installation

A typical installation of Microsoft Office 2000 Premium requires approximately 138 MB of free space on the volume where Windows is installed, even if Office is installed to an alternate volume. Part of this space requirement is for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (approximately 78 MB). Internet Explorer installs to the volume where Windows is installed by default. By installing Internet Explorer before Office, Internet Explorer can be installed to a volume other than the drive volume where Windows is installed. This requires less free space on the volume where Windows is installed, and may allow for the installation of Office to an alternate volume.

NOTE: Internet Explorer included with Office 2000 will not be installed on Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows Me, because these operating systems already include a later version of Internet Explorer.

To install Microsoft Internet Explorer to an alternate volume before you install Microsoft Office, follow these steps:
  1. With the Microsoft Office Disk 1 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, click Start, click Run, and then type the following in the Open box

    drive letter:\Ie5\En\Ie5setup.exe

    where drive letter is the letter associated with the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Click OK to continue.
  2. Accept the agreement and click Next.
  3. Click Install Minimal, or customize your browser, and then click Next.
  4. In the The Folder to install Internet Explorer to box, type the path to the alternate volume. You may also click Browse to navigate to the alternate volume. Make any other changes to the installation and click Next.
Internet Explorer now installs to the alternate volume. If you now perform a typical installation of Office to an alternate volume, the volume where Windows is installed will require approximately 100 MB of free hard disk space. Windows requires additional free space above this for normal operation.

You can also minimize the disk space required on the drive volume where Windows is installed by customizing Office Setup to not install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0. To avoid upgrading to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 when you install Office, follow these steps:
  1. Start the installation program for Microsoft Office 2000.
  2. Click Customize in the Microsoft Office 2000: Ready to Install dialog box.
  3. Click Next in the Installation Location dialog box.
  4. In the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 Upgrade dialog box, click to select Do Not Upgrade Microsoft Internet Explorer.

    NOTE: If you do not see Do Not Upgrade Microsoft Internet Explorer, click Windows Web Browsing Component Only.
  5. Continue with Setup, selecting the options that you want.

MORE INFORMATION

Office also installs items in addition to Internet Explorer on the volume where Windows is installed. This may include fonts, shared dynamic-link library (.dll) files, and other necessary system files. Space requirements vary based on the Office product being installed and on your computer's configuration.
