OFF2000: Microsoft Office.lnk Error When Starting Windows (217550)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Windows, you may receive the following error:
The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Microsoft Office.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is poperly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.

CAUSE

This behavior will occur when you have installed Office 2000 as Run from CD or Run from Network, and either the CD or network server is unavailable.

A shortcut called Microsoft Office, pointing to Osa9.exe, is located in the Startup folder. It is automatically run when you start Windows. If the Office source is not available, the error will result.

RESOLUTION

When you restart Windows and the CD or network server is available, the error will not occur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
