SYMPTOMS

When you try to reinstall Microsoft Office 2000, an error message similar to the following appears:
Out of disk space -- Volume: 'C:'; required space: 499978 KB; available space: 43280 KB. Free some disk space and retry.
This message appears even if you are making no changes to your installation of Office.

CAUSE

This error message appears when the following are both true:
  • You ran the Setup program in Maintenance Mode and tried to repair or reinstall Office. -and-

  • You have less than 50 MB of free disk space on your Windows drive.

RESOLUTION

For the Setup program to continue, check to make sure that you have at least 50 MB of free disk space. If you are running low on disk space, delete any files or folders that you are not using and empty the Recycle bin to create more available disk space. Then re-run Office Setup to reinstall or repair Office.

If you free some disk space and try to repair or reinstall Office, you may receive an alert similar to the following:
Out of disk space -- Volume: 'C:'; required space: 505148 KB; available space: 52864. If rollback is disabled, enough space is available. Click 'Cancel' to quit, 'Retry' to check available disk space again, or 'Ignore' to continue without rollback.
If you want to continue without rollback, click Ignore. Otherwise, click Cancel, free some more disk space, and re-run Office Setup to reinstall or repair Office.
