DSS80 Error Message: MSSound or MSVol Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Kernel32.dll (217447)

When you attempt to install the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 software, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Mssound caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.
Msvol caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card is installed in your computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, disable the audio features on your sound card. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Multimedia.
- On the Devices tab, click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Audio Devices to expand the branch.
- Click your sound card, and then click Properties.
- Click Do not use audio features on this device, and then click OK.
- Double-Click Mixer Devices.
- Click the Mixer for your sound card.
- Click Do not use audio features for this device, and then click OK.
- If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
If the issue still occurs, temporarily disable your sound card. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System.
- On the Device Manager tab, double-click Sound, Video, And Game Controllers.
- Double-click your sound card.
- Under Device Usage, click to clear the Original Configuration check box. (If you use Microsoft Windows 98, click to select the Disable In This Hardware Profile check box.)
- Click OK. Repeat steps 4-6 for each Ensoniq device listed.
- Restart your computer, and then install the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 software.
- To enable your sound card again, repeat steps 1-6, except click to select Original Configuration check box in step 5. (If you use Windows 98, click to clear the Disable In This Hardware Profile check box in step 5.)
