SUMMARY

A serverless sign-up package includes pre-configured .ins files. These .ins files contain the dialing and configuration information necessary to connect to one or more of Points of Presence (POPs) of an internet service provider. Usernames and passwords must be provided separately and entered manually by the user after the browser has been installed.

To create a serverless sign-up package, do the following:
  1. Click Start and point to Programs.
  2. Point to Microsoft IEAK and click the IEAK Wizard.
  3. During configuration of the wizard, a screen titled "Select Sign-up Method" will appear with three options. Click the "Serverless" option button and click Next.
  4. The next screen asks for the location of the Signup.htm file. Examples for Multi- and Single- .ins packages are found in the IEAK Resource Kit at the default location C:\Program Files\IEAK\reskit\isp\servless.

    Two serverless sign-up scenarios exist:

    • One .ins file containing information for connection to a single Point of Presence (POP)
    • Multiple .ins files each containing information specific to regional POPs
    If a service provider has multiple POPs, one .ins file must be created for each POP (Dallas.ins, Spokane.ins, Redmond.ins, and so on.)

    Note: The file name "Install.ins" (with two Ls) may not be used; it is a reserved filename.

  5. Point to the location of the sample "Instal.ins"' (one L) file. This file will not be used in the final build; however, it must be present in order to continue with the wizard.
  6. Complete the wizard with all other desired settings. When the build is created, the IEAK Wizard must be run a second time. This second run is used to include the actual Instal.ins file in the build.

  7. The IEAK Wizard will create a file called "Install.ins." The default location of the file is: C:\<dirname>\WIN95_NT\INS\EN (where <dirname> is the directory selected for the location of the build). Create a copy of the Install.ins file, which was created by the IEAK Wizard. Rename the copy as "Instal.ins."
  8. If only one POP is needed, skip to step 11.
  9. If multiple POPs must be configured, copy Instal.ins as many times as necessary; one for each POP (Dallas.ins, Spokane.ins, Redmond.ins, and so on.)
  10. Open each .ins file with Notepad and manually edit the "Phone" and "TCP/IP" headers according to the settings for each POP.
  11. Edit the sample "Signup.htm" or create a new one. The "Signup.htm" must contain links to each POP's .ins file. The "Signup.htm" file is run after the browser is installed, and allows the user to select their POP. For help, refer to the sample "Signup.htm" at C:\Program Files\IEAK\reskit\isp\servless\MultiINS\Signup.htm
  12. Copy the .ins file(s) (Instal.ins only for a one-POP setup) and the customized Signup.htm file to a new directory called Custom.
  13. Run the IEAK Wizard again. Do not change any settings. Stop at the "Select Sign-up Method" step.
  14. Select the "Serverless" radio button and click Next. Browse to the Custom directory created in step 11.
  15. Complete the wizard. Do not change any other settings.
The build created in step 12 should be distributed to users. This build contains the customized Signup.htm and .ins files necessary to allow users to select the appropriate POP for their region.
