SYMPTOMS

When you are using Internet Explorer 5 to connect to an FTP server, you may receive the following error message when you double-click a folder:
An error occurred opening the folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to access this folder.
Details: The parameter is incorrect

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are trying to open a folder whose name contains an ellipse character (...). Internet Explorer cannot navigate folders with ellipse characters because this character is considered invalid for folder names for MS-DOS and Windows.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use the command-line FTP tool included with Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to connect to the FTP server. These tools can navigate these folders. If possible, the folder names should be changed so that they do not include the ellipse character.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
