This article describes the steps you can use to troubleshoot the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 (DSS80).

If the Digital Sound System 80 does not function properly when you attempt to play CD audio or digital audio, do the following:

  • Make sure the LED light on the satellite speaker is illuminated. If the light is not on, follow these steps:

    1. Verify that the AC power cord is securely inserted in both the wall socket and the subwoofer.
    2. Make sure the connection between the satellite and the subwoofer is secure.
  • Verify that audio plays through both satellite speakers. If audio plays through only one satellite speaker, check the Equalizer Control settings.

    To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Hardware, point to Microsoft Digital Sound System 80, click Equalizer Control, and then click Advanced.

  • Test the performance of the subwoofer. If the subwoofer is not working properly, press and hold down the subwoofer button on the satellite speaker.

  • If the LED light on the satellite speaker does not turn green, follow these steps:

    1. Make sure the connection between the subwoofer and the sound card is secure.
    2. Make sure the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable connection between the subwoofer and the USB port on your computer is secure.
    3. If the LED light on the satellite speaker is flashing, press the Mute button.
    4. Press and hold down the Volume button on the satellite speaker to increase the volume.
    5. Verify that the volume level in the Equalizer Control is not set to the minimum setting. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Hardware, point to Microsoft Digital Sound System 80, and then click Equalizer Control.
      2. Check the volume setting and click to clear the Mute check box if necessary.
    6. Verify that the Equalizer Control slider bars are not at their minimum settings. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Hardware, point to Microsoft Digital Sound System 80, and then click Equalizer Control.
  • If you are unable to play CD audio, disconnect the USB cable from your computer and then attempt to play CD audio again. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
    2. Disconnect the USB cable from both the subwoofer and the USB port on your computer.
    3. Turn on your computer.
    4. Attempt to play CD audio again.
