MacPPT: Cannot Apply Headers and Footers If Placeholders Are Missing (217175)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a Slide or Page Number, Date and Time, or other footer or header items to your presentation, these items do not appear.

RESOLUTION

Replace the missing placeholders on the master slide. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the View menu, point to Master, and then click Notes Master (or click Handout Master, Slide Master, or Title Master).
  2. On the Format menu, click Notes Master Layout (or click Handout Master Layout or Master Layout for handouts or both slide layouts).
  3. Under Placeholders, click to select the placeholder check box for the item that is missing from the master slide.
  4. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

When you attempt to use the Page Number or Slide Number command (on the Insert menu) while you are using any of the Masters (Notes, Handout, Slide, or Title) or when you are in Slide or Notes view, you receive the following message:
To add a page number to this page only, first select the text where you want it to go. To add a page number to every page, use the Header and Footer command on the View menu. Do you want to go to the Header and Footer Command now?
When you click OK, the Header and Footer dialog box appears.

When you attempt to use the Date and Time command (on the Insert menu) while you are using any of the Masters (Notes, Handout, Slide, or Title) or when you are in Slide or Notes view, you receive the following message:
To add the date or time to your own text, fisrt select the text where you want it to go. To add the text or time to the placeholder, use the header and footer command on the view menu. Do you want to go to the Header and Footer Command now?
When you click OK, the Header and Footer dialog box appears.

When you attempt to use the Header and Footer command (on the View menu) directly while you are using the Notes Master, Handout Master, Slide Master, or Title Master, and you try to add in header or footer text or a fixed date.

For the Slide and Title Masters, only the Slide Number box is not selected on the Slide tab. All of the options on the Notes And Handouts tab are selected. When you click Apply To All and the Header and Footer dialog box closes, the placeholders do not reappear on the Master.
