  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q217119

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS), the server is unable to receive any incoming faxes even though the Fax service is installed and the modems are properly connected and configured.

CAUSE

If a modem does not support "adaptive answer" or is not properly detected during the installation of SBS, the Fax service on SBS will not be configured to receive faxes automatically.

RESOLUTION

To enable a modem to receive faxes
  1. On the Start menu, click Settings.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Fax Server.
  4. Click the Receive tab.
  5. Click to select the check boxes next to the fax modems that you want to have receive faxes.
  6. Click OK.
If SBS version 4.5 is installed, configuring the Fax service to receive faxes will be one of the items listed on the "To Do List," which is the first screen that appears after a successful installation of SBS. If the "To Do List" has been closed, it can easily be accessed through the Console used to administer the server by doing the following:
  1. On the Start menu, click Console.
  2. Click To Do List.
  3. Click Configure to receive Faxes.
