Works 2000 WP: Error Messages When You Use the Thesaurus (216816)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Thesaurus in Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor, you may receive error messages similar to the following:
Cannot find thesaurus engine for English (United States), Normal. Run Setup to reinstall Works.
Cannot open thesaurus dictionary. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\Msth_am.lex. Run Setup to Reinstall Works.
Cannot initialize thesaurus engine. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\Msth32.dll, C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\Ctapi3t2.dll. Run Setup to Reinstall Works.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Works 2000 Thesaurus files are damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Rename the Works 2000 Thesaurus Files

To rename the Works 2000 Thesaurus files:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type the following line:

    msth3br.lex, msthes3.dll, msth3am.lex

  3. In the Look in box, click drive where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed.
  4. Click to select the Include subfolders check box.
  5. Click Find Now.
  6. Right-click the Msth3br.lex file, and then click Rename.
  7. Type msth3br.old.
  8. Press ENTER.
  9. Right-click the Msthes3.dll file, and then click Rename.
  10. Type msthes3.old.
  11. Press ENTER.
  12. Right-click the Msth3am.lex file, and then click Rename.
  13. Type msth3am.old.
  14. Press ENTER.
  15. Close the Find: Files Named msth3br.lex, msthes3.dll, msth3am.lex window.

Reinstall Works 2000

To reinstall Works 2000:
  1. Insert the Works 2000 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following line

    drive:\setup.exe

    where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall Works 2000.
