Intel Pentium or Celeron CPU Identified Incorrectly (216204)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q216204 SYMPTOMS When you run the Microsoft System Information tool or view
the General tab in System properties, the Intel Pentium III or Celeron
Central Processing Unit (CPU) in your computer may be listed as an Intel
Pentium II CPU or an Intel Pentium Pro CPU. Also, the processor type may be
displayed instead of the "friendly" processor name. CAUSE This behavior occurs because Microsoft Windows is aware of
only those friendly processor names that existed when Windows was developed.
For example, if a new name came out after Windows was released, that name would
not be available in that version of Windows.
RESOLUTION To work around this behavior, please consult the
documentation that was included with your computer to determine which CPU you
have, or use a third party utility specifically written that identifies
processor type and speed. An example of such a program is the Intel
Processor Frequency ID utility. This utility should provide the correct
information about your processor type and bus speed. To download this utility,
for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, and Windows 2000, view the
