Memory Leak in Site Server 3.0 Search with Windows NT 4.0 SP4 (216143)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4, Site Server Search query results may appear slow during and after a large number of queries. In addition, the Site Server Search computer may stop accepting connections after it receives a large number of queries.

CAUSE

This is caused by a memory leak exposed by Windows NT Service Pack 4. Each query leaks approximately 200 bytes.

RESOLUTION

A fix for this is included on the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 compact disc, which is described in Resolution 1 below. Alternatively, this fix is also available in Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 2 (described in Resolution 2).

Resolution 1

To resolve this problem, apply the fix located in the Support\SS3_Search directory on the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 compact disc.

NOTE: This fix is only available on the compact disc. It is NOT included in the Service Pack files that are downloaded from the Internet.

Resolution 2

This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. service pack for Site Server 3.0. For information on obtaining the service pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Site Server version 3.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.
