SUMMARY

In Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS), a connection to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) can be initiated by either Exchange Server or Proxy Server. If the connection to the ISP is initiated by the Proxy server, it is possible that e-mail that has been queued on the ISP's server may not be dequeued to the SBS server.

When SBSETRN is used to dequeue e-mail from the ISP's server, it is important to note that, in versions 4.0 and 4.0a, if the Proxy server initiated the connection to the ISP, e-mail messages would not be dequeued off of the ISP's servers at all.

This behavior is expected in an SBS environment using a dial-up connection to its ISP for the following reasons:
  • The SBSETRN command in SBS version 4.0 and 4.0a, as well as ETRN, does not send the dequeue command to the ISP's server if the connection was established through a proxy connection (that is, a user tried accessing the Internet, causing the server to dial the ISP).

  • In an environment where SBSETRN is used to dequeue mail from the ISP, the ISP will set up the MX records to point to a secret name created in WINS at the ISP, and not to the actual computer name. This is part of the signup process that makes SBSETRN more secure.
Mail that is queued on the ISP's servers can be dequeued by clicking the Send and Receive Now link in the SBS Console. This link is found on the Manage E-Mail page.
