Err Msg: The Network Server Does Not Support Booting Windows 2000 (214790)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q214790

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Remote Install Service for Windows 2000 to install Windows 2000 clients, you connect to the server, log on, choose an installation option, and begin the installation process. You may then receive the following error message:
The network server does not support booting Windows 2000. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the network adapter in the client computer is not supported in Windows 2000. In this case, Setup cannot locate a Plug and Play identifier match for the network adapter in the client computer. Setup stops at this point because the Remote Installation service requires interaction with the Active Directory directory service to join the domain but cannot join the domain.

RESOLUTION

Installed a supported network adapter in the client computer. For a list of supported network adapters or network PCs, please see the Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).
