SYMPTOMS

You created two different CD-ROMs with identical file names, but with different data in the files, and then viewed the contents of the first CD-ROM. When you attempted to view the contents of the second CD-ROM, the CD-ROM does not display its contents.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Universal Disk Format (UDF) file system and the CD-ROM file system (CDFS) caches the files of the first CD-ROM and does not update this cache when you attempt to view the files of the second CD-ROM.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, change one of the following items on the second CD-ROM:
  • The CD-ROM table of contents.
  • The generated serial number of the CD-ROM.
  • The volume label.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The UDF and CDFS drivers cache the files and metadata for the current CD-ROM. When the current CD-ROM is removed, the computer stores the information in its cache until there is a reason to delete it (for example, low memory). When the second CD-ROM is inserted, the file system verifies as to whether this CD-ROM is the same as the previous one. If the second CD-ROM is different, but very similar, the file system assumes it is the first CD-ROM and displays the cached information.
