PRB: Errors When Sending Mail with CDONTS (214667)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) for NTS 1.2

This article was previously published under Q214667

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to use Collaborative Data Object for NTS (CDONTS) to send e-mail through the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service (IMS), one of the following errors may occur:
Error 429: ActiveX component can't create object.
Error 0x80070003: The system cannot find the path specified.

These errors may occur even if the Internet Mail Service (IMS) is installed and functioning normally.

CAUSE

CDONTS relies on certain registry keys to tell it where the IMS will pick up mail. When the IMS is installed, it will add the needed registry keys only if Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later is installed.

RESOLUTION

Ensure that Internet Explorer 4.0 or later is installed before installing the IMS.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

CDONTS relies on some components that are distributed only with Internet Explorer 4.0 or later. If the IMS determines that Internet Explorer is not installed, it knows that CDONTS cannot be used and does not create the relevant registry keys.
