EncodeSMIME Encryption & DigitalSignature Cause Access Violation (214663)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows NT 4.0 or Internet Explorer 5.0, and the EncodeSMime/DecodeSMime (digitally signed and/or encrypted) DigitalSig/VerifyDigitalSig and EncryptPKCS/DecryptPKCS pipeline is executed, the system may fail with a general protection fault error.

CAUSE

Microsoft Commerce is using an invalid pointer to a Certificate context provided by Windows NT 4.0 SP4 or Internet Explorer 5.0. The next API to use the pointer causes an Access Violation error.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the latest Site Server 3.0 service pack.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Site Server version 3.0. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. service pack for Microsoft Site Server version 3.0.
