PRB: Unable to Manage Share Permissions from SBS Console (214550)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to modify permissions on a share using the Manage Server Console, the following error is encountered:

The Network Name could not be found.
This error message is followed by:

The Wizard was unable to obtain the permission information for the shared folder name.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the hidden administrative shares on the server have been removed or modified.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  • Verify the hidden system shares are accessible on the server. These are the C$, ipc$, admin$, and other shares that are automatically created by Windows NT.
  • Re-create the hidden administrative shares manually, or use the System Policy Editor.
